THE INVASIVE, DESPISED, DIFFICULT TO KILL YET HEALTHY MESQUITE

Often I have described it as a “land of plenty where no one needs to be hungry”. The wild game is plentiful. The drought resistant native edible plants are more than plentiful. And of late, I have been writing about the drought resistant medicinal herbs and plants native of the area. Such is the case with the much maligned, unappreciated and seemingly indestructible yet edible and nutritious mesquite.

Fray Vicente de Santa Maria (1755 – 1813) in his Relacion historica de la colonia del Nuevo Santander (annotated by Ernesto de la Torre Villar, Mexico City, 1973) gave an excellent insight into the usage of mesquite by the Native American cultures of the present Mexican state of Tamaulipas and South Texas. He noted the hunter-gatherer Native Americans ate the fruit of the mesquite when ripe. They also ground it to powder form and used it as a form of flour to produce mezquitamal. This was then mixed with water and used as a medicinal tea, tortillas or tamales. Years later Jean Louis Berlandier in his various 1828 – 1834 reports on the U.S. – Mexico Boundary Commission recorded the mesquite forest on the Laredo Road to Bexar and the Presidio del Rio Grande Road from Bexar to present Guerrero, Coahuila (Mexico City, 1854 and faulty English translation by the Texas Historical Association, Austin, 1980). Moreover, Berlandier’s Caza de oso y cibolo (Mexico City 1854) and John Ewers annotated translation of Berlandier’s The Indians of Texas in 1828 (Smithsonian, 1968) are excellent sources for the Native American cultures of South Texas and their lifestyle and dependence and usage of the mesquite.

Today many adult males in South Texas and the Winter Garden area recall eating the fruit of the mesquite in childhood. They correctly note the mesquite pod when ripe is sweet and although some adults today eat the pods at a whim, it is more frequently mixed with hay and fed to cattle. Last week Pearsall businessman Norman P surprised me by revealing his grandmother used to prepare and serve a medicinal mesquite tea. It seems the family gathered the ripe mesquite pods and ground them to powder-flour form. The powder-flour was used to prepare a medicinal tea to drink when a person had a cold, congested chest or flu-like symptoms. Norman also recalls his grandmother during winter having a pot of hot water on the stove with mesquite powder emitting vapors. He does not know what it was meant to do but we surmised it was probably a form of humidifier such as some people in the past used and many still do today when they place a pot of hot water with Vicks on the stove to help people with breathing, sinus or allergy problems. As a sidebar, some people use a large onion to prepare an onion-tea for the same purpose.

Nutritionists today tell us the Mesquite bean can be ground and mixed with wheat flour produces a sweet jelly, wine or nutty-tasting bread, pancakes, muffins cookies and cakes. Meanwhile, the leaves of the mesquite can be boiled and used as eye drops and especially against pink-eye! Of course most people in South Texas and the Winter Garden area use pieces of mesquite wood to add flavor to their outdoor barbecuing. Most important is the discovery that “mesquite is extremely effective in controlling sugar levels” by people with diabetes! This is due to the fact that mesquite is low in carbohydrates and fat, low-glycemic, and high in dietary fiber. The ground mesquite flour can also be used to treat athlete’s feet and fungus infections. Moreover, some use the gum or resin of the mesquite for sores, burns wounds, chapped lips and sunburn. Equally surprising the bark of the mesquite can be used to stop excessive menstrual bleeding, reduced fevers and dissolve kidney stones! The same mesquite gum or resin can also be used as a treatment for coughs, sore throat, mouth sores, painful teeth and gums and to rid a person of lice. The same can also be used to sooth intestinal pain after bouts of diarrhea, dysentery and food poisoning.

If you have not had a chance to see MK Semos and Hugo Garcia Urrutia's collaborative exhibition of "The Mexican Tsunami." I recommend you take a look.

The wall of kilo bags of marijuana, neatly packaged and stacked, represent the wave that has generated prohibition style mafia tactics that fuel the underground fire of drug imports. There shape and color serve as a reminder, that perhaps, we need to rehabilitate our drug laws. I for one, strongly believe in the decriminalization of marijuana laws.

Opening night, as I drove up to find a parking spot the first thing I noticed was a fire pit lighting up the entrance. With the cool breeze, the fire provided a warm reception. Inside the gallery, it was smoking hot. An Elotes vendor positioned towards the back area added his own form of performance value to the venue.

Many gathered to view the exhibit 'Work Prints' Commerce Street Bridge to Westmoreland Road a Time Capsule Project. Twenty-one Dallas photographers captured what they have seen along this stretch of Commerce/Ft. Worth Avenue through the North Oak Cliff/West Dallas corridor.

Future documentation that follows the next five, to ten years will produce how much change this area will experience. Perhaps someday, the names of these noted photographers will be etched in Dallas history as this era’s contributors to their culture.

A very special thanks to our hosts John Marcucci, and Dave DeSalvo, the organizers of this event Jeff Herrington, David Lyles and thanks to all of you that helped make this exhibit a success.

The exhibit 'Work Prints' Commerce Street Bridge to Westmoreland Road; a Time Capsule Project, attempts to document Ft. Worth Avenue anticipating the changes coming to the North Oak Cliff/West Dallas corridor. The goal is to have a visual record of what this corridor looked like at the beginning of change.

21 Dallas photographers will captured what they see along this stretch of Commerce/Ft. Worth Avenue through the North Oak Cliff/West Dallas corridor. These same photographers hope to return in 2015 and 2020 to document the changes along this stretch of road.

The Mayan's New Beginning 21 December 2012

I do not buy all the Western built hype and fear regarding the year 2012. The Mayan Long Count calendar began in 3,114 B.C., marking time in roughly 394-year periods known as Baktuns. Thirteen was a significant, sacred number for the Mayas, and the 13th Baktun ends around Dec. 21, 2012.

"It's a special anniversary of creation," said David Stuart, a specialist in Mayan epigraphy at the University of Texas at Austin. "The Maya never said the world is going to end, they never said anything bad would happen necessarily, they're just recording this future anniversary on Monument Six."

This apocalypse is "a very Western, Christian" concept projected onto the Maya, perhaps because Western myths are "exhausted."

After surgery on Friday, I spent my day on Saturday recovering. It has been a rainy weekend and all I have been able to do is look out the window or stand at the door. Needless to say it as been a very boring weekend. So boring that Saturday evening I decided to be productive and give my website a face-lift.

While preparing for the Digital Art L.A. event, I realized that I needed to update the blog with information about the next show.

As a member of Inter.sect Art Collective, directed by Christi Nielsen, the group produces short narrative videos from found text using mobile phone technology. A short history about the group, we formed during graduate school at the University of Texas at Dallas sometime in 2007. This work, using mobile phone technology has exhibited at the Dallas Museum of Art, The Dallas Contemporary, and George Pompidou Centre in Paris, France.

A bit about the production, which is a very complex and delicate mind bending experience. In short director Christi Nielsen will "take things that she overhears during the live event and send them as prompts, then google those phrases to see what comes up and using those as prompts, then googling that prompt to see what comes up and sending that as a prompt. You see where this is going". FYI – the name of our exhibition is OH: ---- Pronounced Oh-H if you are not familiar w/ that, it is short for overheard.

There comes a time, if you drive a car or ride a cycle, when sooner or later you are faced with having to replace the tires.
I am at that point of my life, again. I have a Volvo 850 that had the tires replaced sometime in the fall of 2007. Now my other car needs the tires replaced. Must have been all the burning and drifting I've been doing.

Unfortunately, these tires are costly. So, I searched various websites for the perfect match at the perfect price and I cannot help but complain. At least wonder why this car needs to have such high velocity rubber. Oh, yeah its a sports car, duh!

I could sell the car, but I really love the way it handles, and then there is the speed factor. I can talk all day about how quickly it can reach a terminal velocity and it handles curves like they were a straight away.

Anyway here is the run down of what I need; two front tires 235/35 ZR19 91Y, and two rear tires 275/30 ZR19 92W. While I enjoy becoming a savy tire buyer, I still do not understand why 30 is wider than 35 or the difference between 91Y and 92W? Does anyone know the answer?

What I have found - Falken FK 452 for $168.00 for the front and Dunlop Direzza DZ101 at $233.00. Obviously, the problem here is that the manufacturer does not match.

It is a wonder we manage to handle the bombardment of visual advertisements that asks us to consume more and more to keep the economy in motion. The majority of people still display a need to consume in order to create identity. They smoke, drink, flirt, converse, and act out the drama of contemporary life.

We enter this electronic age, with the fears, pleasures, and cultural shock derived from our own experiences of religion, politics, alcoholism, drugs, sex, mental and physical abuses.

We have created a need and desire for more technology, linking us through everyday use, shaping our everyday lives, drawing upon the human mind for development. Influencing and changing how we live, act and love. We create collaborative artworks designed for a Utopian vision of a unified, commercialized culture.

Now our children need higher education, so they may survive in this modern society.

Well, it has been almost two weeks, and as I sit in the western living area of our home. I think about all I have accomplished, okay it's not that much, but I am trying.

For my personal benefit, here is a tidbit. Updated my website, and all the other social networking sites that I belong to. In fact, I added so many sites to my facebook page that a colleague wondered if I have enough. Good question, do I?

I have linked my radar.net site with twitter and made some design changes. I wanted a way to keep a perspective on various stories from my personal website page coolture, which tells a daily, okay maybe every other day, or so... story of my own events and serves as a visual diary for my family, friends, and colleagues.

The Coolture page projects items I send to Radar, QIK, and Tumblr. Radar projects my community conversation about what is going on anywhere and everywhere I go. My intent for QIK is to record meaningful events. I chose this application because of its ability to record better video resolution when I need it, plus it is in realtime. Tumblr has become my mobile narrative, posting as El Malcriado, sharing text, photos, quotes, links, music, videos, yada yada yada!

The three of us awoke with a stuffy nose, but that did not stop us from having a spinach omelet. Several days later, the evergreen in our front yard falls from the weight of the ice. Wait, I forgot to mention that the area went through a full day of rain during freezing icy conditions. But, the whole point of writing today is to tell you about the warm glass piece I donated to the Dallas Contemporary, for the Wish Auction 2009.

The Last Sunday of 2008

Here I sit again, but this time its the last Sunday of 2008.

Its a cold morning and it is 9:30 AM central. I am having a bowl of fruit with granola to get ready for the task of replacing a 32x33 window pane that Sebastian busted. I have finished processing and adding the images of Ix Chel (Mayan goddess of the Moon).

They are now online at Studio Gonzo. Just go to the gallery and click on the Ix Chel image. I have added some new features to the site, first - the viewer tilts around, second - you can select an image to enlarge it, third - clicking the semi-circle arrow flips the image, so you can view the text that has been entered. Which contain my thoughts, a short bio of the model, hair & make-up artist, as well as one of the two clothing designers.

So, have a great New Year, be safe, healthy, smart and creative. But most of all keep on dancing.

A Week Later

Week in review;

1. Is busting up wine bottles to fuse and slump for Christmas gifts.
2. Became friends with Tim Stokes.
3. Commented on Kim Smith's photo.
4. Uploaded new videos to facebook.
5. Got up earlier than normal for a wonderful day ahead.
6. Done what he does, when and where he does!
7. Thought about having something sweet to eat.
8. Looked out the window at the cars going by with a cup of caffeinated cocoa.
9. Spent a long commute in bumper to bumper traffic, and a close call with the iceman.
10. Wondered how you select a shoe to throw? Do you buy them over-sized for easy slip&throw, how much should you spend, carry a spare pair?

And last, but not least wondered why rye grass doesn't taste anything like rye bread?

Some may think my thoughts, and perhaps my life, are folie. But I say, at least I have great memories and can brag about living life as George Carlin would have liked.

Does it ever get better?

As I sit watching the program Sunday Morning I am thinking about, why I do what I do when I do?

Not really, this is more about life and if it ever gets better. Do I want to continue as a systems engineer or take a road with less pay to do what I really want to do? But there is a long list, to be creative, to teach, to pursue a photography career, to run away and start a new life (ok scratch this one off) or perhaps truck driving or clown school.

As I sip my coffee and review my options, I am reminded of the list of to-do items to finish. The half bath needs a sink, the walls completed and the toilet replaced. My back yard needs the leaves raked and I need to produce wood ash for the next shoot. The front yard is not complete and I am not sure I like the abomination I have created (looks good from the top, but not from the street), lacks harmony.

The wood floors need to be refinished, the kitchen is still incomplete, but I want to go outside to break glass and make more platters. My dog Chucho needs more attention, but Sebastian deserves more of my time. I want to exercise more, and care for my health,but it is difficult to get back into the regiment.

Perhaps, I am already living my life to the fullest and I just have not seen the fruits of its labor. I should make a list, start with sell the house, pay off debt, and buy a studio (large 5000 to 10,000 sq.ft). To live, create, and work. Do what I like, watching movies, reading, playing video games with Sebastian and cooking. Wait I forgot to add sex, I really do need a list.

What's Next?

Well, I have received my Master of Fine Arts’ Art & Technology” graduate degree.

Someone asked, “What’s next?” My reply was facetious “I want to travel the US and see America, so I am going to truck driving school.” I found this to be an interesting question. I decided to elaborate my observations and yes it may come off a bit biased since I have recently taken an interest to Mihai Nadin’s “The Civilization of Illiteracy.”
While not wanting to insult the intelligence of those who risk the hazards of the road to bring us needed materials and sustenance for our consuming pleasures. I do want to point out the fact that we have become a nation of illiterates. Now I know that no one likes or wants to be considered an illiterate, but in this case you must consider the following.
What are you going to do now (if psychoanalyzed) probably translates into, what are you going to do to make money? Should we be so obsessed with money? Sure we need it to survive and maintain our existence. After all, we get put on the street if we don’t pay our rent, our utilities get cut off, or you can die from the lack of medical attention. But where is the positive enforcement to continue being a scholar? After all a job is the by-product of an education not vice versa. If you are seeking a job in a particular field you attend vocational training.
To quote Dr. Mihai Nadin “the listing of symptoms: the decrease in functional literacy; a general degradation of writing skills and reading comprehension; an alarming increase of packaged language (clichés used in speeches, canned messages); and general tendency to substitute visual media (especially television and video) for written language.” I don’t think anyone really understands the necessary character in the decline of literacy, but there will be life after.
Here is a prime example of my own difficulty with written language. It has taken me an hour to organize my thoughts (while watching a cooking show on KERA) to complete this simple expression of observations to the question “what are you going to do now?”

Take away all permissions for the group for topsecret.inf We do this by leaving the permissions part of the command empty.
Before: -rw-r----- topsecret.inf
Command: chmod g= topsecret.inf
After:-rw------- topsecret.inf

Open up publicity.html for reading and writing by anyone.
Before: -rw-r--r-- publicity.html
Command: chmod og=rw publicity.html
After: -rw-rw-rw- publicity.html

Heap Dumps

node agent associated with the heapdumps is DTc_was_nodeagent_v6i6 for the application AML.

activate WSADMIN /opt/WebSphere/AppSrvrv6/profiles//bin wsadmin (be extremely careful when working with profiles).

source /tmp/*.jacl (source is where the JACL scsript was placed or FTP'd).
$AdminConfig save (used only when the script is making changes).

Creating New Run Scripts

MODIFY:---- create directory for the script, modify -- profile.jacl,
add postInstallTasks.jacl and create a rollback directory. (be sure the permissions are set to execute chmod 750).
vi applications.txt (add new directory to entries).
vi /apps/WTG/wsadmin/
